WEEKLY USA GRAIN AND PROTEIN REPORT -- MAY 18, 2024
US corn prices finished the week almost unchanged. Reports say that pressure was put on prices by good weather reports. Seems that there will be good rainfall in much of the corn belt. However, longer term weather looks quite wet – perhaps too wet. However, corn planting seems to be coming along just fine so far but there is concern that total corn plantings may not reach the USDA forecasted number.
All US wheat prices were higher overall again this week with US winter wheat up by about USD 5 m/t with spring wheat up by about USD 4 m/t. Wheat had been up even higher during the week but good crop reports from Kansas pushed prices lower on Friday as things looked better than had been expected. The estimates from Kansas look to be higher than the five-year crop average.
Estimated Bulk Grain Freight in USD per m/t, basis heavy grains.

SECTION 2 --- FISHMEAL COMMENTS AND PRICES: PERUVIAN “INDICATION” FISHMEAL PRICES:
I was asked this week why I have coverage on Peru fishmeal every week when it is really an all China use product. My answer was that it is the business I first started in back in the 80’s when everyone used fishmeal in feed rations. Ah but how times have changed for fishmeal, as feed producers found lower cost alternate protein/amino acid sources to fishmeal. I guess that I haven’t changed as much as the market and I still report on fishmeal.
The catch is now up to 1.65 million m/t with an estimated 368,000 m/t of fishmeal and 51,000 m/t of fishoil produced --- based on 22.2% fishmeal yield and 3.1% fishoil yield. 820,000 m/t to go to full quota.
The mini bans in Peru look to be accomplishing what was wanted as the juvenile level in the week’s catch is down to about 26% which lowers the average on the season to 49%. The weekly catch has dropped due to the mini bans but is still between 45,000 and 50,000 m/t per day.
Trade reports say that new business has slacked off due to a lack of supply for super prime and prime fishmeal. Experts think that prices for both super prime and prime should move higher. Total export sales to date are said to be bumping on 400,000 m/t.
More trade people seem to feel that the entire quota will be landed now that the juvenile level has dropped off --- only time will tell --- but the government can step in anytime and stop fishing if it feels that the juvenile situation is not controlled. All we can do is wait with fingers crossed.
