WEEKLY USA GRAIN AND PROTEIN REPORT October 16, 2021
Soybeans seemed to be the weakest item in the grain/oilseed markets this week – down by about USD 10 m/t until Friday when things moved up a little and the week finished with soybean down by about USD 8 m/t. The late in the week rally is tied to the soybean sales to China and expectation of much more to come.
USA corn prices were steady to higher with a rally of a couple of dollars on Friday to push the week up. With a great deal of international interest in buying corn, most every corn market has seen a move to slightly higher prices on the week. Some USA corn experts are saying that we are now in to a new bull market trend in corn.
Wheat prices ended the week steady to higher as, much like corn, international demand for wheat is keeping markets firm. The planting of winter wheat in some countries is going well while others are still finishing off their spring crops before winter planting. These days it seems like only demand factors will push the wheat market prices around.
Russian export tax – October 20 to October 26 – wheat USD 61.30 m/t – up USD 2.60, barley USD 45.90 m/t – down USD 3.50 m/t and corn USD 48.40 m/t – up USD 1.20 m/t.

USA DDGS prices were steady to a little lower on the week with the average export price down by about USD 5 m/t. Export demand is reported to be quite small as buyers don't much like the container freight costs and problems and would sooner wait a little for better days.
Both corn gluten feed and meal are said to be trading a little lower in the domestic market but there doesn't seem to be any weakness in export FOB or CNF prices. It is just very difficult to ship anything by containers these days and high CNF prices are reflecting just how difficult it is.
With corn and soymeal prices a little lower this week there should be some effort to move corn byproduct prices lower, but this has not happened too much this week.

It was a very quiet week this week and most export prices are unchanged. Reports do say that demand is picking up, but the freight and logistics problems have slowed new business. Container freight is almost impossible to arrange and the freight rates are very high. Even if the FOB prices weaken a little the higher freight keeps CNF prices high.
SECTION 2 --- FISHMEAL COMMENTS AND PRICES: PERUVIAN
Not too much to say about Peru fishmeal this week --- still no fishing in the South, IMARPE research cruise is progressing and prices are steady.
China is back from holidays, but no new buying interest seen so far. It is reported in Peru that presales on the next season look to be at about 60,000 m/t, as more business has been reported. No one seems to be too excited about advance purchases/sales – looks like everyone is waiting to see about where the fishing quota will be set. Buyers are hoping for a higher quota with lower prices while sellers don't care as long as prices are steady to higher.
The IFFO is having its meetings next week all by online seminar, for the second year in a row. While COVID has changed everything, some for the better, it is a big miss not to be able to meet everyone in person. Even when COVID is over (or reduced) it will probably take a while for people to get back to attending trade shows and conferences.
