WEEKLY USA GRAIN AND PROTEIN REPORT August 19, 2023

This week felt like a calmer week in the grain/oilseed business although soybean did make a good move higher on the week – up by USD 16 m/t for new crop soybeans. Corn prices finished the week almost unchanged while most US wheat was down by about USD 4 m/t.

Corn and soybean prices were pushed higher by US weather reports that show hot and dry weather in the next few days. Corn prices did try to move higher on Friday but had little success. Some trade papers are suggesting that corn prices could be in for a move lower next week. Soybeans seemed to be up strictly on the weather with no one wanting to be short with a hot, dry forecast.

Wheat prices were higher on Friday, but still lower on the week, due to international news. Russia’s large wheat deal to India helped as did the IGC lowering ending wheat stocks. Futures experts also add that the wheat futures market looked to be “oversold” so that a rally, like Friday’s, was due.

You will see further down in the report that I am dropping some freight rates, this is because the ones being dropped are never used or haven’t been in a long time or it is almost impossible to get any accurate rates for the destination.

Estimated Bulk Grain Freight in USD per m/t, basis heavy grains.

Freight items marked in red will be removed from all future reports.

Prices for all corn coproducts were steady this week but DDGS out a few weeks does seem to be a little weaker. Corn gluten meal prices were steady and there was quite a bit of buying interest in the market – buyers in both Indonesia and Egypt were quite active – perhaps not buying but certainly looking.

Experts feel that all corn coproducts prices will likely move higher for shipment later in the year as normally September/October prices are the lowest of the year due to harvest price pressure.

SECTION 2 --- FISHMEAL COMMENTS AND PRICES: PERUVIAN

So, the 10 day exploratory fishing in North/Central area of Peru had a total catch of 224,000 m/t which will mean about 54,000 m/t of fishmeal. Not too bad a result for a short, intense fishing period.

We are also seeing some indication prices from Peru and they are a little weaker --- not that there is really much for sale as the 10 days fishing didn’t even cover all the sales on the books. According to trade reports there is still about 45,000 m/t of sales that can’t be filled and will have to roll to the next fishing season.

The trade is complaining that there has been no new quota set for the South region of Peru, so no fishing has been possible.

Talk now has turned to the next season with trade estimates for the next quota ranging from a low of 2.0 million m/t to a high of 3.5 mm/t. The season is expected to start in late October.

Reports out of China show that expected fishmeal use could drop by 20% but with fishmeal imports down by 32%.  Peru’s shipments to China up to July 2023 are down by 41% but then all Peru shipments are down by that much due to the lack of fishing.

One has to ask what the long-term effect on world fishmeal consumption this year’s smaller supply will have. Will China finally swing away from using as much expensive fishmeal. Can other protein alternatives work as well (or almost as well) as fishmeal?
